Editorial Policy

The Social History Yearbook accepts for publication articles based on original research which have not previously been published and which are not being considered for publication elsewhere. Submitted manuscripts should be scholarly articles, as different from book chapters and chapters or excerpts from dissertations. The Social History Yearbook publishes articles on the history of social movements and social ideas, the history of classes and social groups, labour history, gender history, migration history, the history of everyday life, oral history, and related fields of study. There are no geographical or chronological limitations.

Not eligible for publication are articles in the fields of economic history, political and diplomatic history, and military history, unless they specifically focus on the social aspects of economic, political, diplomatic and military processes and events.

Articles can be in the Russian or the English language, with an upper limit of 20-30% of each volume being available for materials in English.

Submitted materials are subject to a thorough selection and review procedure. Editors will work in close contact with authors to implement suggested recommendations for revision. In practice, this often involves more than one round of editing.

Authors are strongly advised to stick to the following guidelines in preparing their manuscripts for submission. Manuscripts which do not conform to these standards will not be considered for publication.

Text conventions
Articles should start from one or more clearly formulated research aims, set within the framework of debates and lacunae in existing historiography, pursued in a consistent manner throughout the text, and leading to a set of original conclusions. Authors are kindly requested to bear in mind that the Social History Yearbook is aimed not only at the specialist reader, but also at the wider interested public. Authors should therefore take care not to take knowledge of specific terminology for certain disciplines, periods or methods of investigation for granted.

In addition, the following recommendations might be of help in preparing your manuscript for submission: acronyms are rendered in full at their first mention; direct quotations should be avoided where they do not provide any additional insights other than those which could also be rendered in the author's own words; lengthy quotations are rendered as separate paragraphs indented to the left and right and set in font size 10; quotations in other modern and ancient languages than Russian and English should be translated into the language of the article.

Submission
Articles can be between 40,000 and 80,000 characters in length (including footnotes and spaces) and are to be submitted by e-mail at the following address: si@icshes.ru

Please, make sure to include the following with your submission package:
- an abstract of your article in the language of the article (max. 500 characters)
- Name, surname, academic degree, institutional affiliation, and contact information (e-mail). Upon publication contact information can be included or omitted, as desired by the author.

Manuscript Preparation
Please, prepare the manuscript in line with the following formatting standards:
- acceptable file formats: Rich Text Format (.rtf) or Word97/2000/XP (.doc). Please, avoid using the new .docx file format.
- font: Times New Roman, 12 points, 10 points for footnotes
- single line spacing
- margins: 2,54 cm (top, bottom, left, right)
- no hyphenation
- page numbers in footers, centred
- references in footnotes, numbered continuously throughout the article
- no numbering for headers
- indent of first line of each new paragraph: 1,0 cm.
- footnote reference positioned right before comma or full stop denoting the end of a line, with no extra space inserted: [eg. footnote .]
- please, switch of all auto-formatting, in particular of Headers and Styles

Illustrations, Tables, Graphs and Charts
All illustrations, tables, graphs, and charts should have their own proper title and should be numbered continuously within each category, i.e. separately for illustrations, tables, graphs and charts. Each object should have its own caption containing the following information:

For illustrations - (a) bibliographical reference if reproduced from a published source or (b) if derived from not previously published sources, archival reference or indication of the private or other collection they have been taken from.

For tables, graphs and charts - the source of the data used for their compilation, as well as indication of whether they have been compiled from raw or processed data (calculated by author).

Tables, graphs and charts should contain all information necessary for their proper interpretation, such as a legend, name and values of the axes, etc. Their formatting should exclusively be based on black and white effects, as no colours can be used in the publication process.

All illustrations, tables, graphs, and charts should be placed strictly within the page margins specified in the above. In case they cannot be rendered within these margins, they should be placed on separate pages in landscape (horizontal) orientation.

All comments to illustrations, tables, graphs and charts in the text should contain explicit indication of the number of the object they are referring to. Refrain from using expressions like "the following table", "the table below" etc. - during final layout the location of such objects may change.
